This type of massage focuses on the nervous system and its connection to muscular function. Neuromuscular therapy (NMT) consists of alternating levels of concentrated pressure to the soft tissues (connective tissue, muscles and tendons). NMT assists in balancing the body's nervous system. This modality helps release toxins that may have caused swelling, soreness, and decreased circulation. The release of toxins through NMT can also relieve the compression of the nerve endings that contributes to painful spasms.

Neuromuscular therapy will be used to address five elements that cause pain:

Ischemia: A lack of blood supply to the soft tissues which can cause a hypersensitivity to touch.

Trigger Points: Myofascial trigger points are tiny knots that develop in a muscle when it is injured or overworked. These highly irritated points may refer pain to other parts of the body.

Nerve Compression or Entrapment: Pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, cartilage or bone.   Some symptoms are typically numbness, tingling, and can also include an electric-like shocking pain. Nerve compression may contribute to the ischemic process.

Postural Distortion: Imbalance of the muscular system resulting from the movement of the body off the natural coronal and mid-sagittal planes

Biomechanical Dysfunction: Imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns (i.e., poor lifting habits, bad mechanics in a golf swing or a tennis stroke, computer keyboarding). More easily defined, it is a postural distortion in motion.
